Many homeowners are looking for ways to
save on their heating costs, and investing in efficient German heaters is just
one way to achieve this. There are a number of other things that you can do to
save some money; it pays to take note of these in preparation for the next
winter. We have outlined just some of the things you can do to save money in
the list below for your convenience:
- Wear clothing appropriate for the temperature, have some extra blankets to cover up with around the house, make the bed with flannel sheets and heavier blankets, sleep in heavier pyjamas, and wear slippers with socks around the house. You’ll be surprised at how much less you need to use the heater if you just make warmer decisions.
- Remember that the sun doesn’t find somewhere to hibernate during the winter, it’s still there! Be sure to open up your curtains, blinds or shutters every morning. This will not only help to bring heat in, you’ll be able to use the sunlight for illumination instead of the light switch. Just remember to close the furnishings when it gets dark.
- Only heat the rooms that you’re using and don’t block the heaters with furniture or window furnishings. If you’re not in your bedroom during the day, for example, turn the thermostat down. Turn it back up about 30 minutes before going to bed so that your room is toasty. If you like to sleep with a window open, ensure the door is closed.
- When you leave your home, ensure that the heaters are turned quite low and don’t turn them up again until you get home. If your system has a timer, you can program it to turn down whilst you’re out or sleeping and heat back up just before you get home or get up. It’s generally possible to add a thermostat to any system.
- Take note of the ideal room temperatures for the different areas of your home, as they are not the same across the board. Keep the living areas between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius, the kitchen between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, the bedrooms between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, and the bathroom at around 23 degrees Celsius.
- To stop drafts around your home, inspect the weather stripping around exterior doors, windows, pipes and outlets. Placing draft stoppers or rolled up towels at the bottom of external doors will help to prevent cold air from entering the home and stop hot air from leaving. Seal leaking windows with self-adhesive rubber foam.
- You must vent your home regularly during the winter to prevent the growth of mold. Try opening the windows a few times a day for 5 to 15 minutes (if the temperatures are around freezing 5 minutes should be enough). Before airing, turn off the heater in the room and close the doors to the other rooms to prevent them losing heat.
We hope that the points provided above have
given you some good ideas on how to save money on your heating costs. Although
investing in genuine German heaters is certainly a boon for your home, as they
are far more energy efficient than their ancient counterparts, it’s important
to remember that there are plenty of other things you can do to bring the bills
down.
